If you’re a Massachusetts-based clinician currently credentialed with Carelon Behavioral Health (formerly Beacon Health Options), there’s an important update that could impact your ability to serve Wellsense members in 2026 and beyond.
What’s Changing?
Wellsense, which serves as the behavioral health carve-out for BMC HealthNet’s MCO and ACO plans, has officially notified Carelon and its providers that they will not be renewing their contract with Carelon after December 31, 2025.
Instead of outsourcing behavioral health services, Wellsense plans to bring all management of behavioral health benefits in-house. This means that they will begin handling their own credentialing and claims payment processes starting in 2026.
What This Means for You
If you currently provide services to Wellsense members under the Carelon network, you must be credentialed directly with Wellsense to continue receiving payment for services rendered on or after January 1, 2026.
Providers should have already received a notification from Carelon regarding this change.
Key Dates to Keep in Mind:
- Current Carelon Contract Ends: December 31, 2025
- New Wellsense Credentialing Required By: January 1, 2026
- Credentialing Processing Time: 90–180 days
To avoid disruptions in reimbursement or patient care, we strongly recommend beginning the credentialing process with Wellsense as soon as possible.
